SMS & Retention Growth

Turning customer demand for SMS into a core revenue channel. Flatbill Baseball's customers wanted real-time updates. The Business

Flatbill Baseball is a family-owned business serving baseball players, coaches, and sports enthusiasts with premium baseball gear. The brand was experiencing strong growth and wanted to expand the contribution of retention marketing. Email was already part of the mix, and customer feedback pointed toward an opportunity to add SMS.

02

The Challenge

Customers wanted timely promotions and updates through text messages. Flatbill needed to turn that demand into a channel that could support both customer engagement and revenue. That required a plan for building the subscriber base, responding to shopping behavior, and deciding when to send.

03

The Insight

Customers had already identified how they wanted to hear from the brand. SMS offered a way to act on that preference and reach subscribers at meaningful moments, from their first signup to an unfinished purchase. The opportunity was to make timely communication a consistent part of the customer experience.

04

The Strategy

Launch Attentive as a core part of Flatbill's retention program, alongside email. Build automated journeys around subscriber and shopper behavior, improve signup opportunities, and adjust messaging cadence for high- and low-traffic days. Use personalized messaging and limited-time offers to give customers relevant reasons to return.

05

The Work

  • Launched SMS marketing through Attentive
  • Implemented welcome, browse abandonment, cart abandonment, and session abandonment journeys
  • Established different messaging cadences for high- and low-traffic days
  • Optimized signup units to grow the subscriber base
  • Used limited-time offers and personalized messaging to support engagement and purchases
06

The Outcome

Following the SMS launch, Flatbill's retention revenue increased 4x, and its combined email and SMS subscriber base grew 6x. The cart abandonment journey generated more than $10,000 in its first 30 days. Attentive accounted for 50% of retention revenue, making SMS a core part of the brand's marketing mix.

“Adding Attentive SMS has been a game-changer for Flatbill. It turned SMS into a major revenue driver, helping us bring in $20k+ a month from retention alone. Now, it's an essential part of our marketing mix, alongside email and paid ads.”
